What is a ratchet rivet?
Ratchet rivets are fasteners that typically consist of two identical parts. Also known as assembly clips or snap fasteners, ratchet rivets grip together to form a quick, convenient and tamper-proof fixing. In this guide, we’ll take a closer look at these unique fasteners to help you better understand when a ratchet rivet is right for your application. We’ll cover:
What are ratchet rivets used for?
A ratchet rivet is typically used to secure two panels of soft or rigid and compressible materials, also acting as a special cushioning for larger surfaces. Typical applications for ratchet rivets vary and include automotive, consumer appliances, retail displays, furniture, audio equipment and catalogues. They provide a clean finish to give the application a cosmetic appearance.
Ratchet type rivets are typically plastic for a very good reason. Plastic ratchet rivets are lightweight, corrosion resistant and provide good electrical insulation. Metal ratchet type rivets, such as steel ratchet rivets or brass ratchet rivets, would lack those qualities, nor could they snap together.

How to use ratchet rivets
No tools or screws are needed to install a ratchet rivet. To assemble, the two parts are simply pushed together through two panels. Their interlocking teeth provide strong locking functionality to form a single fastening assembly, ensuring a secure hold.
Types of ratchet rivets
Ratchet rivets are available in different styles, as seen here:
Nylon ratchet rivets
These are the most commonly used, with two identical parts. Made of nylon material, they’re available in black or white, and are flame rated UL94 V2. This is the style that works well for rotating sheets.
These can be used with snap rings and snap-ring washers for greater surface support for softer materials and for larger hole sizes. This combination is ideal for rotating applications.
Ratchet post and pin rivets
A low density polyethylene (LDPE) female washer with a polypropylene (PP) male clip. These plastic ratchet rivets are ideal for corrugated panels. They work on multiple sheets with different thicknesses, such as books and catalogues.
Also available as nylon snap ratchet rivets, flame rated UL94 V2. Shown here is the male clip of the ratchet rivet. The female washer is sold separately. It also works well for corrugated sheets and can securely hold sheets of multiple thicknesses.
Another style of ratchet post and pin rivets, with the washer available separately. Made of nylon, it also comes in different lengths to accommodate various thicknesses.
